SEO Guide 2026: What Actually Works for Business Websites

SEO Guide 2026: What Actually Works for Business Websites
Share:

Short answer: in 2026, SEO still comes down to three things: Google must be able to crawl and render your pages, each page must be the most useful answer for a specific search, and other sites and real customers must vouch for you. Everything else is detail.

This guide replaces our 2024 version. It is written for owners and marketing managers of service businesses, clinics, shops and B2B companies, not SEO specialists.

1. Make Sure Google Can See Your Pages

Before any content or links, check the basics in Google Search Console (free):

  • Indexing report: are your important pages indexed? Look for "Duplicate, Google chose different canonical" and "Soft 404" errors.
  • robots.txt: it must load (HTTP 200) and must not block pages you want ranked.
  • One canonical URL per page: each page should declare itself as canonical. Two conflicting canonical tags, or every page pointing to the homepage, is a common and serious mistake.
  • JavaScript sites: if your site is built with React, Vue or a similar framework, make sure the HTML Google receives already contains the page content (server-side rendering or prerendering). AI search crawlers generally do not run JavaScript at all.
  • Real 404s: pages that no longer exist should return a 404 status or 301 redirect, not a 200 "page not found" screen.

2. Core Web Vitals

Google measures real-user experience with three Core Web Vitals. Aim for the "good" threshold on mobile:

MetricMeasuresGood
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)Loading speed of the main content2.5 s or less
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)Responsiveness to taps and clicks200 ms or less
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)Visual stability0.1 or less

INP replaced First Input Delay in March 2024. The quickest wins are usually compressed images (WebP or AVIF), explicit image sizes, fewer third-party scripts and not loading everything up front.

3. Write the Best Page for One Search

Each important page should target one clear search intent. A service page for "website development company in Mumbai" should answer what a buyer needs: what you build, for whom, rough pricing or how pricing works, process, timeline, proof and how to get in touch.

  • Answer first: put a short, direct answer near the top, then the detail.
  • Show experience: real project examples, named authors with relevant background, photos of your actual work and team.
  • Be specific: numbers, ranges and examples beat generic claims. Make sure every statistic is consistent across your site and can be backed up.
  • Update or merge stale pages: an outdated "2024 trends" post helps no one. Refresh it or redirect it to a current page.

4. Local SEO for Indian Businesses

If customers find you by area ("IT company near me", "dentist in Andheri"):

  1. 1Claim and complete your Google Business Profile: correct category, hours, photos and services.
  2. 2Keep your name, address and phone number identical on your website, Google, Justdial, IndiaMART and other directories.
  3. 3Ask happy customers for genuine Google reviews and reply to them.
  4. 4Create a location page only where you genuinely operate, with useful local detail, not a copy of another page with the area name swapped.

5. Structured Data (Schema)

Structured data helps search engines and AI systems understand who you are. Most business sites should have Organization (or LocalBusiness), WebSite, BreadcrumbList, Service and, for blog posts, Article markup. Two warnings:

  • Do not add review stars (AggregateRating) for your own business unless the reviews are real and shown on the page. Google does not show self-serving review stars and it can be treated as spam.
  • FAQ rich results are now shown mainly for government and health sites, and HowTo rich results were retired in 2023, so do not expect those to boost visibility.

6. AI Overviews and AI Search

Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity increasingly answer questions directly. To be cited:

  • Make sure their crawlers can access your pages (check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and others) and that your content is in the HTML.
  • Write clear, self-contained passages that answer one question each, with facts and sources.
  • Build your brand outside your website: industry directories, reviews, LinkedIn, and mentions on reputable sites.

7. Links and Mentions

Links from relevant, reputable websites still matter. Earn them with things people want to reference: original data, useful tools, pricing guides, and genuine partnerships. Avoid paid link packages: they waste money and can lead to penalties.

Quick Monthly Checklist

  • Search Console: new indexing errors? Clicks and impressions by page?
  • Core Web Vitals report: any pages in "poor"?
  • Update one important page with fresh information or examples.
  • Publish one genuinely useful article that answers a real customer question.
  • Ask for reviews and respond to them.
